The joy felt when hearing laughter and witnessing the growth and development of children is the most beautiful gift for parents. The desire to provide the best, especially in terms of education, is certainly inevitable.

This education should be adjusted to the child’s age. At a very young stage of development, learning is often packaged in an interesting way, for example through sensory toys.

Sensory toys help children learn, develop, and explore their surroundings. In addition, this type of game can also improve children’s motor, cognitive, and social skills.

The skills acquired from this game will greatly help children in writing, speaking, drawing, and distinguishing sizes and colors.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Sensory Toys for Babies and Toddlers

With so many toys on the market, determining which ones are the “best” for your baby or toddler largely depends on your child’s interests and developmental stage. However, finding high-quality, affordable toys that are designed to stimulate the senses can be a daunting and time-consuming task. That’s why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to help.

We conducted extensive research to identify 65 of the best sensory toys on the market, then compiled a shortlist of 24 top-rated products to test. The next step was to get parents and their kids to try each toy. Our team of testers unboxed the toy, assembled it, and watched as babies or toddlers played with it. Each toy was rated based on ease of use, play and entertainment value, sensory experiences offered, benefits in learning and skill development, durability, and value for money. Children’s reactions to the toy were the most important factor in our assessment. From the feedback we gathered, we ultimately selected 13 toys to feature in this article.

We also interviewed three experts—a psychology professor, a pediatric occupational therapist, and a certified behavioral analyst—to dig deeper into the key features to look for when choosing a toy.

We also consulted the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safety guidelines to ensure that all of the toys on our list are safe for children ages 0 to 3.

In doing so, we hope to help you find the right sensory toy for your little one.

To understand how these toys benefit different families, we conducted extensive market research, analyzed forum feedback, and read user reviews to find out what parents across the country love and hate about these sensory toys.

Editorial integrity is a principle we uphold in all of our publications. You can read more about how The Bump develops and reviews all of our articles, including product reviews.

This interactive play mat from Fisher-Price, a Best of The Bump award-winning sensory toy for babies, has received rave reviews from two of our baby testers. One parent says, “My 11-month-old loves playing with this toy. I’m sure the colors and patterns are really appealing to her, plus she loves the built-in piano.”

With three different stages of use, this toy can grow with your child. It doubles as a play mat for newborns and a tummy time. Once babies can sit up on their own, they can practice their musical skills on the light-up piano—which can also be removed for toddler music sessions on the go. This versatility is appreciated by Rachel, who says, “I love that this toy can be used in so many different ways for different ages and play styles. My 11-month-old loves the mirror and piano, while my 2-week-old loves looking at the toys hanging from the arch.”

Toys with high-contrast colors and a variety of sounds are ideal for young children, as Hamilton notes. This toy meets both developmental criteria, featuring a black and white arch and ten colorful toys that can be positioned as needed. Plus, it offers over 85 songs, sounds, and phrases for auditory stimulation. Rachel gave high marks for the sensory aspect of this toy, stating, “It encourages sensory exploration through sound (music), sight (colorful shapes and animals), and touch (piano and grip toys).” She also added that it helped teach her oldest daughter about cause and effect, as the piano makes sounds when pressed. But the learning opportunities don’t stop there! “As she grows and begins to recognize shapes, colors, and animals, and develops her speech, the advanced settings on the piano will help her practice recognition, which I love!”
